Ink cartridges are segregated into two types –Thermal and Piezoelectric. The first one uses a metal chip that heats up on the passage of small electric current. It then pushes the ink through the nozzle of the cartridge, this result in printing of ink on the paper in a controlled manner. Piezoelectric ink cartridge functions on piezoelectric crystal that prints the ink on the paper by changing its shape and size according to the requirement. This type of ink cartridge is less efficient than its thermal counterpart.
Since heat is generated inside the ink cartridge, your printer may be at potential risk of damage, if the ink level in the cartridge is low. Some manufacturers produce ink and toner cartridges that contain an auto reset chips, thus, making your task easier.
Ink is the liquid state of materials, while toner is in the powder form. The efficiency of the toner depends upon the size of its particles, the smaller the size the higher the quality of your printouts. Toner cartridges contain the toner that is basically a Carbon based powder in a fine and dry condition. It is mixed with polymers like polyesters to make their composition complete. The Laser burns it into the paper after melting it due to the heat generated for its functioning.
